Comments on: We need to stop judging and criticizing other teachers for how much we work https://truthforteachers.com/stop-criticizing-how-many-hours-other-teachers-work/ Real talk from real educators Mon, 19 Sep 2022 04:06:55 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9 By: Laura https://truthforteachers.com/stop-criticizing-how-many-hours-other-teachers-work/#comment-940643 Mon, 19 Sep 2022 04:06:55 +0000 https://truthforteachers.com/?p=148173#comment-940643 ]]> I forwarded your article to other teachers (1st grade, 2nd grade, etc.). I received an email from my principal stating “If you have items to share with the staff, I would be happy to share with them.” I am thinking she did not appreciate that I shared the article. Maybe I should have sent it to the teacher’s emails rather than by grade level‍♀️

Between having Zero time to do paperwork with my full load of 28 students with special needs, and the IEP’s, MDR reports, tracking service minutes, supervising para professionals, making lesson plans, being the case manager for all meetings, contacting parents, getting parents to sign all paperwork, contacting parents and interviewing them, pre IEP meetings to share test scores, then the facilitative meetings with slides, connecting with general education teachers, there isn’t enough minutes in the day. I am not certain if the work load is just my district or many Special educators jobs. I have been doing this for over 20 years and the work load has double since I started in 1990.

I absolutely love watching Abbott Elementary – and – it recognizes and amplifies teachers as heros as much as it reinforces the narrative that good teachers spend their own money and sacrifice themselves completely “for the children.” The demonization of teachers as the haves (so well said!) coupled with the demands that teachers act in defense of their students is most unbearable when foisted on each other. Police officers do not have a legal duty to protect us when their own safety is at risk – but teachers do. Imagine if policing was considered women’s work and teaching was a man’s job. Teachers would get overtime. At the very least.

I’ve felt guilty because I’ve taken less work home than ever this year, and this was something I really needed to hear.
