Google Docs has literally changed the way I teach. I LOVE IT! Students write, collaborate, share, edit and revise. Students are much more engaged because their classmates are reading their work and commenting on it. Their voices and word choice have improved dramatically. Plus, I can pop into their papers at anytime to help. I had students working on their summer adventure story (first one back to school) over Christmas break. (You can set up notifications to track students.) That would never happen if their papers were in a notebook.

This way, rather than printing out a bunch of comments and stapling them on, you simply highlight the ones that apply to that student! Also, if you are only marking for one particular element, you can give very specific feedback/suggestions.

I’m very passionate about the teaching of writing (among other things) and love all these points! I particularly love #1-Don’t correct every mistake… we don’t need the practice, and the children’ won’t necessarily learn from it. I love #4 – Use sticky notes… I’ve always felt funny about writing directly on the children’s writing. It seems disrespectful to me. My favorite point is #7, the compliment sandwich. The compliments reinforce the positive writing skills and encourage them to keep doing those. The one constructive comment is a little easier for their delicate egos, and is enough for them to focus on in one sitting.
