My teaching partner and I are very interested. We teach 4th grade and all students have chromebooks. Our question/concern – what do you do with those students who do not view the instructional videos at home? (We teach 4th grade). Thank you!

Winship principles force teachers to switch grade levels. Principals should never force teachers to move to a new grade level. They should always ask the teachers.

I sent a question to your blog over Easter weekend but I don’t know what topic I sent it under and my computer has crashed since then. I’ve been looking for a response but I can’t find my original submission. Could you please help me find it or send me the response to my email? I was asking if teaching is still for me even if I don’t LOVE kids (I LOVE my own biological kids) but do CARE for my students and their feelings and their future.

I teach 2nd grade and have tested the method this year with my class. I have a couple students who don’t have computers so they would come in eatly and watch the videos during tutoring. But every week someone had an excuse as to why they couldn’t watch the videos….we couldn’t get it to open on the iPad, we didn’t pay the internet bill and it got cut off, the excuses went on and on. And my tutoring group eent from 2 or 3 to 6 or 7. So I decided insteaf to make flip homework optional. I linked all of the video clips and songs I used each week to my website. The kids loved it. I added optional assignments that earn the students reward tickets. They love it. Its turned into a home extension of enrichment. We all love it!

Regarding the disadvantage for kids who don’t have access at home, the model can still be great for in-school use. Instead of having to spend much of class time delivering lectures/teaching to the whole class or trying to split yourself in three, you could have the class time split – in an elementary classroom you could do time shifts where some kids are watching videos while others are doing follow-up assignments with teachers, in higher grades where each period is a different subject/teacher you could do a day-by-day split. So maybe like a half-flipped classroom; you can have many of the advantages without worrying about what goes on at home. Not the same as ALL the advantages, namely the major shift of in-school time expenditure, but I could still see it being more efficient than many current lower-tech practices (particularly the whole-class lecture thing. Or even if you do divide the class into groups for lessons/work, video lessons enable a quieter atmosphere and more teacher attention to the workers).
