Or, chant\/sing the beginning of the line and have students respond with the end of last word of the line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use regional or sports team call-and responses.<\/strong>\u00a0A teacher in St. Louis uses \u201cWho dat?\u2026We dat!\u201d Here in NYC, I\u2019ve heard \u201cHello, Brooklyn\u2026How you do?\u201d (from a Jay Z song.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Incorporate traditional call-and-responses from various world cultures<\/strong>. When I lived in D.C., I taught many children from Nigeria and Ghana, where call-and-response techniques are deeply rooted in the culture and extend beyond the classroom walls. \u201cAgo\u2026Am\u00e9e!\u201d (pronounced (AH-go, AHM-ay) is a great example to use in the classroom\u2013hold the notes a little bit (Ahh-gooooooo\u2026Am-\u00e9eeeeeee!) Here\u2019s a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.com\/2014\/01\/%20http:\/www.mamalisa.com\/?t=es&amp;p=3215&amp;c=36\">traditional call-and-response song from Ghana<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.singup.org\/songbank\/song-bank\/song-detail\/view\/326-kye-kye-kule\">MP3 here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Put a twist on the old \u201cIf you can hear me, put your hands on your head.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Teacher Stacey M. says she tells her students, \u201c\u2018If you can hear me, put your hands on your head, on your shoulders, knees, etc\u2019, but as I make the motions, I will say a different body part. So, they are watching me put my hands on my shoulders, but I am saying,\u2019Hands on your hips\u2019. It\u2019s hilarious! It takes them a while to figure it out and really gets them to focus on me.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Refer to the school motto or theme.<\/strong>\u00a0Teacher John B. says, \u201cWe have a school wide attention signal. We are the Giunta Giants. The adult says Giun-ta and two claps. Students say Gi-ants and two claps.\u201d \u00a0Tanya M. says, \u201cCall the name of your school and they respond back with the mascot name.\u201d Betsy M. shares this one: \u201cTeacher: Warriors Believe!!! Students: Warriors Achieve! It\u2019s our middle school mascot and works every time!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reinforce character education and life lessons.<\/strong> Anything you have kids repeat multiple times per day is going to get ingrained in their heads, so use the opportunity to teach something meaningful! Try: Never\u2026Give Up! Work hard\u2026Do right!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ask your students to come up with their own.<\/strong> This takes 5 minutes and can be a great back-to-school activity or something to do after a holiday break to build a sense of community and get kids ready to learn again. Have students work in pairs or small groups to brainstorm a list of call-and-responses they\u2019d like to use, and narrow the list down to their top 5. Have them submit the list to you for final selection.
