This week\u2019s episode is really a continuation of that topic, because if you want to get anything back from your kids, they\u2019ve got to have some ownership over their learning.<\/p>\n<p>Tell me if this is a familiar scene in your classroom: you ask a question, and the same 4 kids raise their hands every time. The kids aren\u2019t listening to your directions and have no idea what to do for a task so you keep repeating yourself. You\u2019re constantly trying to convince them that a topic is exciting and that the task is going to be fun, and they\u2019re dragging their heels and only completing the work if you\u2019re standing over them, praising, encouraging, threatening, yelling, bribing, or whatever trick you pull out of your bag that day.<\/p>\n<p>If you can relate to that scenario, there\u2019s nothing to be embarrassed about. Every teacher has been there, and most of us feel like that on a regular basis. It\u2019s normal. First and foremost,\u00a0<em>you\u2019ve got to make the learning matter.<\/em>\u00a0<strong>If the tasks you\u2019re giving your students are irrelevant, you\u2019re going to have to work twice as hard to get kids to participate, and you\u2019re not going to get any energy back from them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kids need to have a meaningful purpose for their work just like we as teachers do! They need to believe that the tasks they do make a difference beyond the four walls of the classroom. Student engagement comes naturally when kids identify a need or problem in the world and create ways to use skills you\u2019ve taught them to solve those problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/luckeyfrogslilypad.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/lemonade%20stand\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2549 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/lemonade-stand-collage-3-600x450-1.jpg\" alt=\"lemonade-stand-collage-3-600x450-1\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/lemonade-stand-collage-3-600x450-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/lemonade-stand-collage-3-600x450-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My friend Jenny teaches 3rd grade and blogs about it at Luckeyfrog\u2019s Lily Pad. Last spring, her class completed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/luckeyfrogslilypad.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/lemonade%20stand\">an amazing project\u00a0<\/a>that I think is the perfect example of turning the learning over to students. They had already finished their standardized testing for the year and had a little bit more flexibility in the curriculum and scheduling. So, Jenny\u00a0helped them identify a need in their community: they wanted to help people in a nearby town who were affected by tornados.<\/p>\n<p>One of the kids got the idea to sell lemonade. Listen to all the skills these kids practiced: They estimated their costs, raised capital, asked the PTA to become an investor, created a Google form to organize parent volunteers and a doc to create a schedule, made persuasive advertisements, did a science experiment to find the right recipe, counted the money they made, and wrote thank you notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These students\u2019 learning resulted in changing outcomes: their hard work wasn\u2019t just to get an A on a paper\u2014their work\u00a0<em>mattered<\/em>\u00a0to other people, to those victims of the tornado.<\/strong>Though it probably won\u2019t be possible to do something like that for every lesson you teach, I encourage you to use stories like these as inspiration and make your students\u2019 learning matter in any way you can.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2550 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/154498_10150978002319188_919929906_n.jpg\" alt=\"154498_10150978002319188_919929906_n\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/154498_10150978002319188_919929906_n.jpg 500w, https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/154498_10150978002319188_919929906_n-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing. If your students are sharing their work with the world, they want it to be good. If they\u2019re just sharing it with you, they want it to be good enough.<\/p>\n<p>Most kids aren\u2019t excited about writing a paragraph when the only person who\u2019s going to read it is the teacher (and he\u2019s just going to mark it up and explain everything that\u2019s wrong with it.) Try to publish kids\u2019 work as much as possible, even if it\u2019s just on a school website or class blog.\u00a0<strong>Look for ways to give kids an authentic audience that they care about and will work hard to impress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The learning matters more when you get kids connected with the outside world. Have your kids participate in a project started by my dear friend\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pernillesripp.com\/\">Pernille Ripp<\/a>. It\u2019s called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalreadaloud.com\/\">Global Read Aloud<\/a>. Students all around the world read the same book and then discuss it with other classes via Skype.<\/p>\n<p>Or, here\u2019s another idea. You would be amazed how many children\u2019s book authors are willing to do a Google Hangout with classes. Imagine how motivated some of your students would be to read a book if they knew they\u2019d get to ask questions from the author afterward!<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll notice in all of these examples,\u00a0<strong>not only does the learning matter, but the\u00a0<em>responsibility<\/em>for the learning has in large part been placed in the hands of students.<\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s a really important strategy for gaining energy from kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get kids actively involved in their learning so they\u2019re doing just as much work\u2013or even more\u2013than you are.<\/strong>\u00a0When students take charge of the learning process, they are able to channel their excess energy into pursuits that matter.<\/p>\n<p>As their teacher, you become re-energized from watching the learning process in action and interacting with kids who are enthusiastic about their work. The flow of energy in the classroom becomes reciprocal as you motivate them, and they in turn motivate you.<\/p>\n<p>So how can you get started with empowering kids to take more ownership of their learning? The brilliant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/globalearner\">Alan November<\/a>\u00a0once posed a question that I think is a fantastic starting point. He said,\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cWhat are you doing in your classroom now that you could turn over to your students to do themselves?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2551 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Alan-November-600x442.jpg\" alt=\"alan-november-600x442\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Alan-November-600x442.jpg 600w, https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Alan-November-600x442-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Can you\u00a0do more student-directed projects? Can you involve students in the assessment process, giving them a chance to create rubrics and grading criteria and score themselves? Can you use technology to give students more choice in how they demonstrate knowledge?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turning the learning over to students is probably the best way I\u2019ve seen to increase student engagement.<\/strong>\u00a0You see, engagement is not the same thing as compliance. Some of our \u201cbest\u201d students are simply people pleasers. They sit up straight and fold their hands on their desks because they\u2019re doing what we tell them to do, not because they\u2019re truly invested in their own learning.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a difference between being busy and being truly engaged. Sometimes kids know how to go through the motions without really learning, or are hard at work on a task that won\u2019t produce any real gains.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an easy way to get insight as to who has ownership of the learning. When kids are truly taking ownership, they will be asking questions which drive learning. If the teacher is doing all the questioning and the students are just answering, it\u2019s possible the kids are being busy or compliant but are not truly engaged. The goal is to get kids asking why, how, what happens if, and couldn\u2019t we.\u00a0<strong>When they are posing questions that matter to them and then pursuing the answers, you can be sure they are thinking deeply about the topic and are invested in their own learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2547 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/who-is-asking-the-questions-600x452.jpg\" alt=\"who-is-asking-the-questions-600x452\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/who-is-asking-the-questions-600x452.jpg 600w, https:\/\/truthforteachers.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/who-is-asking-the-questions-600x452-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I go into a lot more depth about empowering students to take ownership of their learning in my upcoming book that I plan to release this spring.
